The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Iligan City gathers at Bayug Island, Sendong Monument, in Hinaplanon, Iligan City, to commemorate the 8th anniversary of Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi). This solemn event serves as a time for remembrance, reflection, and healing as we honor the lives lost, recognize the resilience of the survivors, and reaffirm our commitment to disaster preparedness and recovery.
Eight years ago, on the night of December 16 to early morning of December 17, 2011, Typhoon Sendong struck Northern Mindanao, leaving devastation in its wake. What started as a tropical storm intensified into a deadly typhoon, unleashing unprecedented rainfall that triggered massive flash floods and landslides. The heavy downpour caused the Mandulog River and other waterways in Iligan City to overflow, sweeping away entire communities in mere hours.
